Mariam-uz-Zamani’s Tomb

Mariam-uz-Zamani’s Tomb is a historic mausoleum located in Sikandra, near Akbar’s Tomb. This tomb was built in honor of Mariam-uz-Zamani, the principal wife of Akbar and mother of Jahangir. She passed away in 1623, and her son Jahangir commissioned the mausoleum shortly thereafter, completing it by 1627. While she is sometimes referred to in popular culture as “Jodha Bai,” historical records confirm her name as Mariam-uz-Zamani.

The structure follows a square plan and is primarily built of red sandstone, echoing the architectural style of Akbar’s tomb nearby, though on a smaller scale. The mausoleum features delicate archways, chhatris (domed pavilions), and ornamental panels, reflecting the Mughal approach to combining grandeur with elegance. Surrounding gardens and water channels, arranged in the classic charbagh layout, create a serene setting suitable for reflection and remembrance.

Mariam-uz-Zamani’s Tomb is significant not only for its architectural beauty but also for its historical context. It symbolizes the respect and status accorded to royal women in the Mughal era and offers visitors a quieter, less crowded glimpse into the dynasty’s heritage in Sikandra. Its proximity to Akbar’s Tomb also allows travelers to appreciate the close familial and political connections that shaped the Mughal Empire during the early 17th century.
