Raj Ghat

Raj Ghat is a serene memorial located in Old Delhi, on the banks of the Yamuna River, marking the cremation site of Mahatma Gandhi. Following his assassination on 30 January 1948, Gandhi was cremated here on the following day, 31 January 1948, and the site has since been preserved as a place of national remembrance. The memorial itself is a simple yet powerful black marble platform, inscribed with the words “Hey Ram,” believed to be his final utterance.

Set within landscaped gardens, Raj Ghat reflects the simplicity and philosophy that defined Gandhi’s life. An eternal flame burns at one end of the platform, symbolizing his enduring legacy and influence. Visitors from across the world come here to pay their respects, including global leaders who often lay wreaths during official visits to Delhi. Quiet and contemplative in atmosphere, Raj Ghat offers a moment of reflection amidst the bustling energy of the capital, serving as a lasting tribute to the father of the nation.
